Is playing golf in Northern Ireland at least once in your life high on your personal bucket list? Congratulations: Breathtaking views, spectacular landscapes and links courses that are among the declared favorites of well-known golf professionals make every golf trip through Ireland's spectacular north an unforgettable experience.
Like everywhere else in Great Britain, golf is a national sport in Northern Ireland. No wonder some of the world's best golfers come from this scenic region. It is home to some of the finest golf courses in Ireland, if not the world. On a golf tour of Ireland, be sure to include a round at the renowned Royal County Down Golf Club, Port Stewart, Castle Rock or the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland: the uplifting feeling of playing on these legendary courses with sea views is hard to beat: What do you think of a stay at the luxurious Lough Erne Resort near Enniskillen? The 5-star resort on Northern Ireland's largest lake hosted guests at the G8 Summit in 2013. With its two exclusive championship golf courses, the resort offers fantastic conditions for short and long stays during your golf vacation in Northern Ireland. We will be happy to advise you on planning your golf trip through Northern Ireland.
Royal Portrush Golf Club is home to one of the best and most challenging links golf courses in the world, the Dunluce Links, and the hidden gem, the Valley Links. The only club in Ireland to have hosted The Open Championship, Royal Portrush is a members club which welcomes visitors all year round to face the challenges of its courses and to brave the testing conditions.
Royal County Down is located in one of the world’s most naturally beautiful links settings in the Murlough Nature Reserve. Against the magnificent backdrop of the Mountains of Mourne, the links stretches along the shores of Dundrum Bay, zigzagging back and forth to provide a different vista from virtually every hole. The narrowest ribbons of fairways thread their way through as impressive a set of sand dunes as could be imagined. The fairways are surrounded by purple heather and golden gorse, so beautiful to look at but so punishing for any who may stray from the prescribed path.
Royal Belfast Golf Club was founded in 1881 and lays claim to the title of the oldest golf club in Ireland. In 1885 the Club became 'Royal' after the Prince of Wales (subsequently King Edward VII) was invited to become its Patron during a visit to Ireland. The current Patron is HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York.
Belvoir Park Golf Club was founded in 1927. This Championship parkland course meanders through 163 acres of mature woodland was designed by the famed course architect Harry S. Colt, who in 1929 laid out the plans for the famous Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush Golf Club. Belvoir Park Golf Club is situated just two miles from Belfast City Centre, and is within easy reach from both Belfast Airports and easily accessible to the two famous Golf Clubs of Royal Portrush and Royal County Down. Belvoir Park Golf Club boasts a distinguished history having hosted The Irish Open, The Irish PGA, and The Irish Close.
Malone is a fine championship course situated on 330 acres of undulating wooded parkland. Its 27 holes of secluded gently undulating parkland countryside is just 5 miles from Belfast City centre. The centrepiece of the course is the beautiful natural trout lake which extends for some 20 acres. The course is a real challenge with mature trees shaping many of the holes with the lake first comes into play on the 13th. Beware the 15th where the tee shot to a tricky undulating green is over water all the way. Also the 18th is daunting where almost any ball to the right of the green is water bound.
Castlerock Golf Club, is a classic links course set amid towering dunes. Situated on the Causeway coast and only a 20 minute drive from both Royal Portrush Golf Club and Portstewart Golf Club, Castlerock is a more than worthy neighbour to both of these great Irish links.
Founded in 1894 and redesigned by Willie Park jnr in the 1920’s this championship links course received its greatest makeover with the purchase of land known as “Thistly Hollow” in 1986. This enabled the club to build a stunning new seven holes through towering dunes and fabulous and natural links land. Designed by Des Giffin the Strand Course is the jewel in the Portstewart portfolio.
During a golf vacation in Ireland, there is also a lot to discover in the small country of Northern Ireland, which is part of Great Britain, away from the numerous, beautifully situated golf courses: The Titanic Museum in Belfast, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Giant's Causeway with its 80,000 basalt columns and the romantic beech avenue at Dark Hedges are among the well-known highlights of a trip to Northern Ireland. If you want to focus on natural beauty and sport during your golf vacation in Northern Ireland, you can experience pure nature, magnificent views and unforgettable golfing experiences along the north coast of Antrim or in the Mourne Mountains.
A good starting point for your next golf trip through Northern Ireland is the capital Belfast. Here, everything revolves around the legendary Titanic and its history. From there, continue along the wild coast, where Game of Thrones fans, golf enthusiasts, nature lovers and culture vultures alike will get their money's worth, towards Londonderry. Decide for yourself which series locations, castles, palaces and golf courses are on your itinerary through Northern Ireland. We will be happy to put together your individual golf trip along the famous Causeway Coastal Route with the best accommodation, sights and sporting highlights.
In Northern Ireland, the saying “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing” applies more than anywhere else. You know that it can suddenly rain at any time of the year or day. But you may not know that the wonderful golf courses in Ireland can be played all year round thanks to the mild Gulf Stream. So you can enjoy a golf vacation in Northern Ireland even when it's too cold in winter or too hot in summer elsewhere.
