The Playa Mujeres Golf Club, designed by internationally renowned golf course architect Greg Norman, was created as an outstanding 18-hole championship course that opened in 2006. It is located on 930 tropical acres within the Playa Mujeres Resort, just seven miles north of Cancún in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The golf course is characterised by its environmentally friendly design and the harmonious integration of water hazards, jungle, bunkers and greens, all arranged with native plants and trees. Some holes offer breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea. Additional facilities include a well-stocked pro shop, a posh clubhouse, a restaurant, spacious practice facilities and a lounge area.
The Iberostar Cancun Golf Club, formerly known as the Hilton Cancun Golf & Spa Resort, is picturesquely situated along the beautiful Nichupte Lagoon. This championship course stretches across an impressive landscape of tropical vegetation and a variety of wildlife, including colourful birds, iguanas and the occasional crocodile. Water hazards and strategically placed bunkers require skill and planning. A particular highlight is the 16th hole, which is surrounded by the impressive Mayan ruins of El Rey dating back to 500 AD. The course offers both beginners and experienced players a fair challenge. There is also a 25-metre practice area, a driving range and a putting green. There is no mention of an internationally renowned golf course architect.
The Riviera Maya Golf Club, opened in 2010, offers two remarkable golf courses: a championship course, which is one of the top five in Mexico, and an executive course, which is considered the best nine-hole course in the region. These were designed by renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. The courses are skilfully integrated into the lush Mayan jungle landscape. It should be emphasised that both courses were laid out deep in an old limestone quarry, with the fairways following the natural contours of the landscape and running through jungle, mangroves and rubber trees. The impressive scenery is complemented by lakes and cenotes. The clubhouse offers excellent practice facilities, including a driving range, a chip area with bunker and a large putting green.
The Pok Ta Pok Golf Course, located between the Nichupté Lagoon and the Caribbean Sea, is Cancun's oldest golf club. Opened in 1975, the golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and combines coastline with Mayan ruins, offering a special experience. The club is located in the hotel zone, 20 minutes from the airport, and is accessible from all major hotels. Facilities include an 18-hole course, driving range, putting greens, tennis courts, pro shop and a restaurant overlooking the Nichupté Lagoon. The club is open all year round and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
The Moon Spa & Golf Club in Cancun is the first golf course in the region designed by Jack Nicklaus. It has been masterfully divided into three nine-hole, par-36 courses: Jungle, Lakes and Dunes. These stretch across the picturesque, hilly landscape of the Riviera Maya and are named after the characteristic features of the terrain. Each of the courses offers different challenges: The Dunes Course runs through sandy dunes, while indigenous wetlands have also been skilfully integrated into the design. The local vegetation gives the course a special scenic flavour. Strategically placed bunkers provide additional challenges, but the course is not intimidating even for beginners. Four different tee options make it accessible for all skill levels.
El Tinto Golf Club, formerly known as TPC Cancun, is an environmentally friendly golf course that opened in 2006 and is a favourite destination on the PGA Tour. Internationally renowned golf course architect Nick Price designed the course, placing great emphasis on protecting the local flora and fauna. The course blends seamlessly into the existing landscape and makes skilful use of natural elevation changes and water hazards. With over 80 strategically placed bunkers and five lakes, it offers a challenging but fair test for all players. Various tees allow golfers of all abilities to experience the special features of the course. The club is conveniently located close to the region's major hotels and is less than half an hour from Playa Del Carmen.
