The Dominican Republic is often celebrated for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, but this beautiful Caribbean gem is also home to some of the world's most spectacular golf courses. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to experience a FAM (Familiarization) trip organized by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) in collaboration with the Dominican Republic Tourist Board. This trip was a whirlwind tour of top-tier golf courses, luxurious resorts, and unforgettable Caribbean vibes, cementing the Dominican Republic's status as a premier golf destination. Here’s a recap of this amazing experience!
Our itinerary featured six of the Dominican Republic's most acclaimed golf courses, each offering unique challenges and breathtaking views:
Our journey began at Corales, a Tom Fazio-designed masterpiece. This course is renowned for its "Devil's Elbow," a dramatic three-hole finish that plays along the cliffs, offering stunning ocean views. The crashing waves and coastal breeze made every swing memorable, and it’s easy to see why Corales is a regular stop on the PGA Tour.
Next on the list was Punta Espada, a Jack Nicklaus signature course. With eight holes directly on the Caribbean Sea, it's a feast for the eyes. The signature 13th hole, a par 3 that plays over the ocean, is both a test of nerves and precision. The layout blends perfectly with the rugged coastline, offering incredible scenery and challenging play.
For a change of pace, we headed to Lake Barcelo, nestled within the lush Barcelo Bávaro Grand Resort. This course may not be as famous as the others, but it provides a relaxed atmosphere with its tropical flora and strategically placed lakes. It's a great option for golfers looking to enjoy a laid-back round surrounded by nature.
Considered one of the top courses in the Caribbean, Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo is a Pete Dye classic. With seven holes skirting the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea, it’s a visually stunning and technically demanding course. The unpredictable sea breeze adds an extra layer of difficulty, making it a favorite among seasoned golfers.
Also located at Casa de Campo, Dye Fore offers a completely different experience. This course, perched on the cliffs above the Chavón River, boasts panoramic views of the lush Dominican landscape. With its dramatic elevation changes and wide fairways, Dye Fore is a visual spectacle and a joy to play.
Our final stop was PGA Oceans 4, a relatively new addition to the Dominican golf scene. This course seamlessly blends modern design with the natural beauty of the Caribbean coast. The strategic layout and well-maintained greens make it a must-play for any golf enthusiast visiting the region.
Between rounds of golf, we were treated to the finest accommodations in the Dominican Republic. Each resort offered its own unique charm and amenities, providing a perfect balance of luxury, comfort, and local flair.
Our trip began at the Westin Punta Cana, a beachfront property with a laid-back vibe. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and the resort’s beach bar offered the perfect spot to unwind with a cocktail while watching the sunset over the turquoise waters.
Next, we stayed at the Paradisus Palma Real, a stunning all-inclusive resort. The elegant architecture, luxurious suites, and sprawling pool area were a sight to behold. Dining at the resort was a highlight, with a range of gourmet options offering fresh seafood and Dominican specialties.
Our final stay was at Lopesan Costa Bavaro, a vibrant and modern resort that blends luxury with a lively atmosphere. The highlight here was the beachfront location, where we enjoyed stunning views of the Caribbean Sea, and the resort's impressive pool area, perfect for cooling off after a hot day of golf.
At Bahia Principe Bouganville, we experienced the tranquil atmosphere of this adults-only paradise. The resort’s private beach and serene setting made it an ideal spot to relax and recharge after a day on the golf course. The service was impeccable, and the food was a delightful mix of international and local flavors.
Beyond golf and luxury accommodations, the trip was a full immersion into the Dominican Republic's vibrant culture:
We savored traditional Dominican dishes like mofongo, fresh ceviche, and locally caught fish. The island's cuisine is a mix of Spanish, African, and Taíno influences, creating a unique and flavorful experience.
No trip to the Dominican Republic is complete without experiencing its lively music scene. We danced to the rhythms of bachata and merengue, the heartbeat of Dominican culture, at various beachfront bars and resort nightclubs.
Of course, we couldn’t leave without spending time on some of the Dominican Republic’s world-famous beaches. From the soft sands of Bávaro Beach to the secluded shores of Playa Minitas at Casa de Campo, the crystal-clear waters and warm Caribbean sun were a perfect complement to our golf-filled days.
This FAM trip, organized by IAGTO and the Dominican Republic Tourist Board, was an incredible showcase of what makes the Dominican Republic a top choice for golf enthusiasts. With its world-class courses, luxurious resorts, and vibrant culture, it offers a golf vacation like no other. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a casual player, the Dominican Republic has something to offer every golfer.
If you’re considering your next golf getaway, look no further than the Dominican Republic. With stunning landscapes, challenging courses, and the warm Caribbean hospitality, it promises an unforgettable experience both on and off the greens.
Hasta pronto, Dominican Republic! We’ll be back for more birdies, beach days, and bachata rhythms soon.
