Swinging Through the Algarve: Our Golf Group Adventure in Tavira

There's something special about packing your clubs, leaving the grey skies behind, and jetting off with your golf group to somewhere where the sun is pretty much a guarantee. This spring, we spent an unforgettable 7 nights in the Algarve, based in the charming town of Tavira, and let’s just say – it did not disappoint.

Our Base: AP Maria Nova Lounge Hotel – Tavira

We stayed at the AP Maria Nova Lounge Hotel, a modern, adults-only spot perched just above Tavira's old town. With rooftop views, a solid breakfast spread, and a quick walk down to the cobbled streets of the center, it was the perfect home base. Morning cappuccinos with sunshine, evening cocktails with a view – not a bad routine.

The Golf Line-Up: Six Rounds, Six Beauties

  • 1. Castro Marim Golf

Set among pine-covered hills near the Spanish border, with wide fairways and a peaceful vibe.

  • 2. Quinta do Vale

Designed by Seve Ballesteros himself. Tough, technical, and a real test of accuracy (some of us are still talking about hole 13).

  • 3. Benamor Golf

Scenic and slightly more forgiving, a lovely change of pace.

  • 4. Quinta da Ria

Coastal views for days. Truly stunning with water hazards that might distract even the most focused golfer.

  • 5. Monte Rei

The crown jewel of the trip. Impeccable service, immaculate fairways, and a layout that’s as challenging as it is beautiful.

  • 6. Quinta de Cima

Long, strategic, and perfectly maintained – a great course to end on.

Sunny Skies and Perfect Swings (Mostly)

We were treated to 20-degree sunshine all week, which made it even easier to enjoy those post-round beers on the terrace. It’s the kind of weather that makes you forget what month it is back home.

  • Wandering Tavira – The Town with a Soul

Tavira itself deserves a chapter. With its Roman bridge, riverside cafés, and a laid-back, authentic vibe, it’s got just the right balance of history and hospitality. One night, we wandered into a tiny square and stumbled across live music drifting from a tucked-away restaurant. You can’t plan moments like that..

  • A Trip to Cabanas – Coastal Calm and Fresh Seafood

Midweek, we ventured to Cabanas, a nearby fishing village that feels like a hidden gem. Boardwalks, calm waters, and a line-up of waterfront restaurants where the seafood is as fresh as the wine is crisp. Perfect spot to unwind (and rehash every shot of the day).

Final Thoughts

If you're thinking about a golf trip with friends, the Algarve, especially around Tavira, should be high on your list. Great weather, challenging courses, and a relaxed pace of life that makes everything taste better – especially that cold beer after 18 holes.
